FW: Letter to the PM from Yukon Fish and Game Association FW: TEAM CSSA E-NEWS - November 1, 2011 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, November 1, 2011 10:38 am From: "Dennis & Hazel Young" Subject: First-ever sportsmen and gun show by the Grenville Fish ... ...and Game Club THE RECORDER AND TIMES - NOVEMBER 1, 2011 Gun registry in their sights By NICK GARDINER http://www.recorder.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3353208 PRESCOTT -- Plans by the federal government to repeal the long-gun registry were welcomed at a weekend sports-men's show by firearms enthusiasts who identify themselves as the unintended targets of the legislation. Visitors and vendors at the first-ever sportsmen and gun show sponsored by the Grenville Fish and Game Club praised the Conservative government's intention to follow through on a commitment to shut down the registry and destroy related files. The event itself, attended by more than 450 people, is nonpolitical like the fish and game club itself, but organizers generously allowed a reporter access to the show to speak with patrons. While few people spoke about their political affiliation, there was little doubt about their antipathy to the gun registry. "I'm glad it's being done away with," said Winston Baker of Iroquois, a deer hunter who was at the show with his brother Allan looking at gun accessories. "You never know what you'll come across," said Winston Baker, who argues the registry is a huge waste of taxpayer money that should have been directed to better use. He said the registry, which cost about $2 billion to implement by a Liberal government which initially projected costs in the millions of dollars, provides an illusion of protecting the public safety when it really only goes after law-abiding citizens. Baker also supports the notion that law-abiding citizens who use rifles and shotguns for sport shooting, hunting and to protect farm livestock have been unfairly singled out by the legislation. "They're not taking the guns from the criminals and gangsters because their guns aren't registered," said Baker. He also scoffed at the notion the registry provides security to police because they can determine if long-guns are registered at a residence when there is a complaint. "They've always got to assume there are weapons in a house. The same as when they stop a car on the highway." Other visitors and vendors expressed similar opinions. "Most crimes are not committed by people who have registered guns," said John Sideris, a gun vendor and owner of Wing's Live Bait and Tackle of Lyndhurst. "It's a waste of time and money." Rick Pearson, owner of Brockville's R and R Bullets, said adequate safeguards already exist outside the gun registry. Pearson noted people are required to take safety courses before being allowed to buy a gun, and the sale is registered separately from the gun registry. Steve Hayes, who likes target shooting and selling firearms accessories, said he won't celebrate until the repeal of the registry is final. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but you never know until it happens," said Hayes. He said the paperwork for registering a long-gun is a minor hassle but the costs borne by gun owners and the invasion of their privacy is unwarranted. "I'm sure they had the best intentions in mind when they created the registry but it's been too costly and affects people's privacy," said Hayes. Event organizers declined to comment about the gun registry repeal to remain non-partisan but they were eager to speak about the success of the show as a first-time fundraiser. Special events co-ordinator Lynn Holmes said the club runs entirely on volunteer efforts and supports a range of community activities, from the annual Pitch-In roadside cleanup in Augusta Township to Prescott's Harbour Days, when they provide kayaks and a pontoon boat for free rides. Holmes said the club has the space to hold such a show after an indoor archery range which was used to host this year's event. He said a broader sportsmen, fishing and gun show is already being planned for the spring. nickg@recorder.ca - ---------------- Grenville Fish and Game Club http://www.grenvillefishandgame.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Nov 2011 10:58:29 -0600 From: "Joe Gingrich" Subject: South Carolina Sheriff: 'You Need to Protect Yourself' http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/11/01/south-carolina-sheriff-need-to-protect-yourself/ South Carolina Sheriff: 'You Need to Protect Yourself' By Joshua Rhett Miller November 01, 2011| FoxNews.com A South Carolina sheriff is making the extraordinary suggestion that local women arm themselves following the attempted rape of a woman at a local park, saying "you need to protect yourself." Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright, the county's top law enforcement officer since 2005, suggested local women apply for a permit to carry a concealed weapon during a news conference Monday about the attack on Sunday at Milliken Park in Spartanburg. "It just struck me wrong that we keep telling everyone 'trust us, trust us, trust us,' but in reality, you need to protect yourself," Wright told FoxNews.com. "If you are not a convicted felon or someone who causes trouble or don't have any mental issues, buy a weapon to protect yourself and get some good training." Walter Monroe Lance, 46, of Spartanburg, was charged Monday with kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and grand larceny in connection with the attack. Lance was ordered held without bond, Wright said. Wright suggested that had the unidentified victim been armed, perhaps with a .45-caliber handgun concealed in a fanny pack, she would have stood a better chance fighting off her attacker. "If she didn't shoot the guy, she could have at least stopped him and made him leave her alone," Wright said. "You can defend yourself." Wright said he was "tired of looking at victims" of crimes whose perpetrators are arrested multiple times and are later released without significant jail time. Lance, for example, had been arrested more than 20 times, he said, including for offenses like rape, battery and resisting arrest. Wright characterized him as an "animal" during Monday's news conference. Since making the suggestion that women lawfully arm themselves, Wright said his office has received more than 200 phone calls supporting his stance. Only one didn't "praise" the call to action, he said. "We're not trying to raise up a militia here, we're sending a message to the bad guys that we're tired of it," he said. "I'm through getting bit." "There are tons of guns on the street now, I would just prefer to train the good people who have them so there'd be less accidents," Wright said. "I am plainspoken in a lot of aspects and we cannot be everywhere. I think the people in this county understand how I go after these drug dealers and people who break into our homes . We're just very relentless in our pursuit of justice." Asked if he believes his message resonated with Spartanburg County residents, Wright replied: "I would say that if you're a concealed weapons permit instructor, you're about to make a lot of Christmas money." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Nov 2011 12:08:10 -0600 From: "Joe Gingrich" Subject: Government Glossed Over Cancer Concerns About Airport... ... Curiously there is a prevailing primitive sense that those most central to the dysfunctional dynamics of the world can be distinguished in terms of binary logic as "us" and "them". "Us" are necessarily the "good guys" acting appropriately, whether the criterion is economic growth, profitability, sustainability, advance of knowledge, peace-keeping, democratic values, spiritual insight, etc. "Them" are necessarily the "bad guys" frustrating and undermining such worthy initiatives. This logic most explicitly drove US foreign policy in the formation of the Coalition of the Willing in response to 9/11. ( Len sez: 911 was treason . . not bin Laden) The logic continues to be fundamental to such ongoing conflicts as: Israel-Palestine, developers-conservationists, "clashes of civilization" (Afghanistan, etc), "axis of evil" (North Korea, etc), interfaith discourse by which "right" and "wrong" are defined to isolate the "unbelievers" (Catholicism and others, Judaism and others, Islam and others, etc). The phenomenon is evident in the "two culture" conflict between science and the humanities -- in which, for example, the latter may be simply framed as misguided or deluded by the former. It is as fundamental to the relation between governmental and nongovernmental bodies, as it is to that between profit-making and nonprofit-making bodies. It is inherent in the impoverished relationship between "mainstream" and "alternative" worldviews, or between the formal and the informal (ie "black") economies (Interacting Fruitfully with Un-Civil Society the dilemma for non- civil society organizations, 1996). ======================== Len comments: WITH EVIDENCE . . Evidence-based, scientific scrutiny has established the long gun registry as a failed model for gun crime control, and a wasted investment in public safety. The Auditor General of Canada found that the long gun registry cost Canadian taxpayer over one billion dollars, a figure which has since been at least doubled. She also noted that the department had been unable to substantiate whether or not the long gun registry had increased public safety or saved lives. This money could be better spent on the creation of a prohibited offenders registry to track the more than 250,000 persons who are prohibited from possessing firearms; to create more guns and gangs units in municipalities across the country; to increase border security to halt the flow of illegal handguns into Canada; or spent on key national priorities for all Canadians like health care. We thank you for following through with your promise to scrap the long gun registry. Sincerely, Gordon Zealand. Media reportage in Canada is taking on muddy water as so-called editors and reporters torque their stories under the guise of unbiased journalism. It should send every Journalism 101 instructor slinking under the pub table, never to be seen again. Since the tabling of Bill C-19 to scrap the gun registry and destroy the records, Ottawa Citizen reporter Glen McGregor has taken media spin to dizzying new heights. He's the bastion of responsible journalism who made the long-gun registry records publicly available a couple of years ago. (Of course, it did help to prove our point that the registry is a poorly protected shopping list for bad guys. Thanks, Glen.) Now he's hatched a story on the perspiring back of a Carleton University computer science professor who claims it would be extremely costly to push the registry's delete button. (Those who can “do” and those who can't, “teach”) What's worse, McGregor recently found an archivist association that contends the registry is a valuable historic document whose data should be saved to thwart a government precedent of deleting old records. (For accuracy's sake, see the quote from the former Privacy Commissioner that follows this editorial.) McGregor no doubt sees himself as a caped crusader in red tights, but he conjures up a vision of a hand-wringing waif who imagines bullies hiding behind every tree. It is beyond belief that any reporter could suggest these stories are without prejudice, And, it's even more demoralizing to witness a Canadian editorial board in this fine nation that would permit such piffle. In fairness, there are many reporters in Canada who are true to their craft of unbiased reportage. But, too many have drifted into the murk where yellow journalists scribble controversy for self-promotion. This week, Glen McGregor ascended to the winner's podium of media clown as literate Canadians fairly cringe with embarrassment. Feel free to write to the Ottawa Citizen -- ask for McGregor to join the ranks of those who deliver newspapers instead of those who write them. - ------- * And now for something completely different: The case for deleting gun registry records * FROM: Privacy Commissioner of Canada TO: The Expert Panel on Access to Historical Census Records DATE: February 9, 2000 “At the heart of any conception of privacy, and any code of privacy protection, lies the notion that people have a basic right to control their personal information. The Library and Archives of Canada Act demands that the disposal of records managed by government institutions "must occur under processes and procedures which permit the identification and preservation of archival and historical records." To be specific, per section 12. 1 of the Act, "no government or ministerial record, whether or not it is surplus property of a government institution, shall be disposed of, including by being destroyed, without the written consent of the Librarian and Archivist or of a person to whom the Librarian and Archivist has, in writing, delegated the power to give such consents." So, unless the top Librarian and Archivist has given the okay in advance, which I rather doubt, the Cons have announced that they plan to break their own law. Ipso facto, call these guys. You're welcome. (By Warren Kinsella – warrenkinsella.com – October 31, 2011) - ------- OOPS – THE COALITION'S SLIP IS SHOWING: The powerful Ruger Mini-14 semi-automatic rifle used in the 1989 Montreal massacre and this summer’s Norway bloodbath. Sniper rifles that can pierce light armour from a distance of up to 1.5 kilometres. Or one that can drop a target two kilometres away. They are all weapons that will soon be declassified under the Conservatives’ bill to kill the long-gun registry and freed from binding controls that now see them listed with the RCMP-run database. They fall under the class of “non-restricted” weapons and they are about to become unregistered. Restricted or prohibited firearms such automatic assault rifles, sawed-off shotguns or handguns are not affected by the bill and would remain under current controls. But under Bill C-19, the law would no longer require a licensed gun owner to hold a registration certificate for “non-restricted” weapons. The Coalition for Gun Control, which has mounted the fiercest defence of the long-gun registry, says many are not the workaday rifles and shotguns used by “law-abiding duck hunters and farmers” that the Conservatives say should be protected from Orwellian gun control laws. The coalition is still analyzing the legislation. But in information sent to the Star, its researchers point out that under the Conservative bill the Ruger Mini-14, the .50-calibre sniper rifle known as the Steyr-Mannlicher HS .50 — a sniper rifle that can pierce light armour from a distance of up to 1.5 km — and the L115A3 Long Range Sniper Rifle, which can accurately hit a target 2 kilometres away will no longer require registration certificates... (Toronto Star – November 1, 2011) - ------- OUTDOORS WRITER SAYS REGISTRY DATA HAS WONKY HISTORY: The first week of the 2011 gun deer season has now passed into history with a reported kill of 1,308 deer. The total so far for those hunting with a bow is 132 animals, up from last fall's total of 105. Last fall, during the first week gun hunters had bagged 1,370 deer... We also realize that many of the people in this world cannot hunt due to a variety of reasons and are thankful that here in Canada we still have that opportunity. A large part of that is being able to own, carry and use a firearm. Unfortunately there are still significant numbers of the general public and those in political positions that would have it otherwise. Those people are intent on banning the private ownership of firearms and would do so supposedly to reduce crime. Yet, when that is taken to its logical conclusion it's not about crime prevention as much as the disarming of law abiding citizens. Fortunately the Harper government is in the process of doing away with the long gun registry. Those who want to keep the long gun registry claim they need it in order to ascertain by police when going to a residence if there are firearms present. Yet, the Harper government will keep the list of those Canadians who have a firearms licence. So we point out the obvious one more time. In the past in order to register a firearm in that registry the owner must have first obtained a firearm licence. Thus, once the long gun registry is did away with police officers can then simply access the list of those with a firearms licence to determine if there are firearms in the residence. Then too, police officers always assume that even if those living in the residence are not in the national firearm registry, firearms may be present and will act accordingly by taking the proper precautions. We also point out that if an individual has a firearms licence that's a very good indication they are a law-abiding citizen having met all the requirements involved in obtaining that licence. It's well-recognized by now that the former Chretien government implemented this expensive and proven useless long gun registry mostly so they could gain more votes by reassuring the general public that they were actually doing something to combat crime. We also note that the handgun registry has been in force since 1934 yet right now if police were to use the handgun registry records to track down all the handguns in Canada it's unlikely they would be unable to locate more than half of those firearms. Until at least the 1960s owners of handguns only had to register their handgun at their local police station and that's where the records were kept until recent years. Over the years many of those records were either mislaid or lost and never made it into the federal handgun registry. About 10 years ago handgun owners were informed they must re-register all their handguns. Word was that was due in part to trying to consolidate the handgun ownership records into one federal system and then, due to a computer crash, the feds losing much of the data... To say that the handgun registry is a mess is an understatement, and so too is the long gun registry that is about to be put out of its misery. Yet, the handgun registry will be kept, mostly because handguns are easily concealable and are the weapons of choice by criminals. The other side of the coin is the large number of law-abiding handgun owners that use handguns for a variety of activities from target shooting to participating in cowboy action shooting, which by the way, is a lot of fun. (By Everett Mosher – Times & Transcript (Moncton NB) – November 1, 2011) - ------- LETTER: STRIPPED OF RIGHTS BY JENNIFER DADSON: Letter writer Graham O'Neill may be surprised to learn that most gun owners agree with him regarding the new Internet security bill. Running surveillance on lawabiding citizens just because they might commit a crime is unacceptable, as is taking away the presumption of innocence and the right not to incriminate oneself. These are rights that most Canadians take for granted. These are rights that legal gun owners no longer have. The Firearms Act, of which the registry is a key component, strips these rights from law-abiding citizens simply because they choose to own a gun. Yes, the Internet bill goes too far, but so does the Firearms Act. This is not a fight between gun owners and everyone else; it's a fight between Canadians and the bureaucrats who push bad laws.
