This isn't a grade 10 class on civics. We're talking party politics here and what a party or it's candidates say won't count for squat Wednesday morning. With the ongoing world financial crisis/recession/depression, it will be an entirely different ball game and they will adjust accordingly to the new situation. It also makes for a convenient way to duck out of any election promises due to the new dynamic of the world's fiscal mess. Think not? Let's compare notes Wednesday morning, or the week thereafter. The rants and pie-in-the-sky promises from the smaller fringe parties, who can afford to say and promise the moon, will soon be left in the dust, their contribution to Canadian politics relegated to muddying the waters and splitting the vote, thereby denying either major party the chance of a majority. It remains to be seen what effect if any will result from the internet "strategic voting" web sites. Lies, damned lies and political statements - just like "... Rosie O'Grady and the Colonel's Lady; sisters under the skirt ..."; with apologies to Rudyard Kipling. Listening to Dion rant about Harper's lies is enough to cause my gorge to rise. I guess the Liberals figure we've forgotten about the Cretin's Red Book promise to eliminate the GST. A bunch of maroons! A pox on the lot of them! It's the system stupid .... and it's about time we recognized it and acted accordingly. Around 6:20 p.m. at an LCBO on 595 Bay St., near Yonge St. and Dundas St. W. two security guards working at the store spotted a man and a woman taking bottles from the shelf and throwing them into a bag. As the suspects tried to leave, the security officers confronted them and while they were able to handcuff the woman, the man resisted. Police say without warning, the man pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the two officers. He then ran away with the alcohol and his female ally, who was still cuffed. No one was hurt. The New York Daily News reports that one hot new trend for females saying goodbye to the single life is a day at the shooting range, trying everything from high-powered rifles to handguns, under the supervision and guidance of firearms experts. BY MEREDITH BLAKE Sunday, October 12th 2008, 4:00 AM If stumbling around Times Square wearing a tacky feather boa while drinking fruity cocktails through a phallus-shaped straw sounds like your idea of hell, you're not alone. For years, bachelorette parties have been synonymous with drunken carousing, usually involving some combination of male strippers, plastic tiaras, karaoke and excessive alcohol consumption. But for many women, there is a growing trend toward slightly less debauched but equally fun ways to say goodbye to the single life. "The hottest trend is the destination bachelorette party," says Rebecca Dolgin, executive editor of; theknot.com - - "With couples marrying older, their tastes are a bit more sophisticated. Today's bridal party is looking for activities that are not only unique, but experiential. And with so many bridesmaids being scattered across the country, getting together and spending some quality time doing something special is what is most important." But locals don't have to travel far for a bridal send-off that will blow her mind. The five boroughs are loaded with alternatives for a "hen night" she'll never forget. Annie, Get your Gun! Love her or hate her, Sarah Palin might just be onto something. Shooting is an increasingly popular pastime for women - even city slickers. "Our guests are in fashion design, medicine, technology, finance" says Andy Massimilian, CEO of Manhattan Shooting Excursions. A popular bachelor party destination, shooting is becoming more popular with the bachelorettes, too. He says, "35%-40% of our customers are women." For bachelorettes, he recommends the one-day excursion to their shooting range in southern Connecticut, where both rifles and handguns are available; - - unlike; - NYC , where you can only shoot handguns - what a snooze!). Guests are picked up in Manhattan at 9:30 a.m., early enough for a full day of shooting. They also get lunch and custom souvenirs, like mugs and dog tags. Parties head back to Manhattan around 6, and are dropped off at the restaurant of their choice. www.eliteshooters.com © Copyright 2008 NYDailyNews.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2008 11:43:07 -0600 From: "David R.G. Officers converged on Balfour Education Center just before 9 a.m. after receiving a call that a girl was on campus with a rifle. There were no reports of shots fired or injuries, and the school was locked down as a precaution. About one hour later, officers left the school after the lockdown was called off. Earlier this morning, a bus driver reported seeing a female carrying a rifle, according to Deputy Terry Tweed, school resource officer assigned to the school. The woman was not on school property and was carrying a weapon, possibly a BB gun, to shoot rats. The Sheriff’s Office said she was not a threat and was not doing anything wrong. “The school went into a lockdown just because there had been a firearm sighted. We’d been alerted and they went through their safety procedure,” Henderson County Schools Superintendent Stephen Page said. “They did an excellent job. Everybody cooperated,” Page added. Sheriff Rick Davis said the response was textbook perfect. “We handled it as well as could be done, and our job was made so much easier by the quick response of all the school staff,” Davis said. He said everyone did their job and he would not change anything about the response. “We would not want any lesser degree of vigilance on part of those whom we trust with the safety of our children,” Davis said. A call came in just before 9 a.m. today and dispatchers sent deputies to the school, which offers high school students alternative ways to learn. At 9:20 a.m., a dispatcher said a bus driver had seen a woman carrying a gun. A half hour later, a sheriff's deputy told a Times-News reporter that a report had come in of "a suspicious female that had a firearm with a sling." The school was surrounded by more than a dozen deputies and city police officers on foot and in vehicles looking for the girl. Officers were searching the campus and the woods south of the campus. At least seven sheriff's cruisers were on the scene, some officers were armed with shotguns and rifles. The investigation determined that no crime had been committed. The area where the person was sighted was private property and there was no sign that she brandished the weapon in a threatening manner or had any criminal intent.
