In Canada from 1961-1990, there were a total of 15,198 homicides.

63.1% were with a non-firearm.
14.3% were with a non-restricted rifle.
13% were with a illegally owned restricted firearm.
6.5% were with a non-restricted shotgun.
2.4% were with a unidentified firearm.
0.7% were with a legally owned and registered restricted firearm.
					(handguns, some rifles)

 36.9% were with a firearm, as follows:

 13.0% (35.2%) were with an illegally owned restricted firearm.
  6.5% (35.2%) were with a non-restricted shotgun.
  2.4% ( 6.5%) were with a unidentified firearm.
  0.7% ( 2.9%) were with a legally owned and registered restricted firearm.

So, 13% of homicides were committed with illegal handguns and 0.7% with 
legal handguns.  That's 4 or 5 homicides each year with legal and registered
handguns* and 60 to 70 with illegal/unregistered handguns* (out of 500+ homocide
s each year).
 
*I say handguns, even though some restricted firearms are full-auto
firearms (SMGs), because no registered machine guns have ever (since
1934) been used in a homocide in Canada.  (So why are they restricted
to the point where you can't ever own one unless you owned one before
1978?)
