The mortality tables list about 200 fewer homicides than Juristat, and far fewer handgun homicides. The estimate for "Legal Handgun" homicides is based on the yearly average percent (0.72%) from 1961 to 1990, since Statistics Canada stopped asking if restricted weapons were registered in their revised homicide database, starting in 1991. I have attempted in these figures to correct the errors in the tables; I come up with far more accidental deaths than are listed (incorrectly) in the mortality table totals. If anyone is interested I have some nifty pie-charts made from these figures which I will fax or snail-mail on request.
