Last updated: 20 October 1995 The following is a summary of responses received from various senators. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- These are the attitudes that the senators displayed. BTW, I carefully checked the spelling of the names, so you should be able to use this as a reference. John Lynch-Staunton: Will not take position until after hearings. Mabel M. DeWare: Has concerns about certain aspects, especially regarding the section on gun registration. Will listen closely, will be able to recommend changes if and where they are required. Encourages writing to all senators. Gerald Comeau: Appreciates that concerned Canadians take the time to express opinions and suggestions. John G. Bryden: Read letter very carefully. Will consider views. Sharon Carstairs: In favour of gun legislation. Believes it will result in safer homes and streets. Included her speech in the senate and "Facts about the Firearms Bill" (little red book). Marjory LeBreton: Points out that members of the PC Senate Caucus have widely different opinions. Intends to support C-68 although questioning the cost and whether money could be better spent on increased border security. Does not agree that registration will lead to confiscation. Is encouraged by virtual unanimity regarding sections dealing with crime. Will closely follow testimonies. Would welcome further comments. Included statement by Sen. Lynch-Staunton (thorough study ASAP) and speech by Sen. Ghitter (thorough study, against C-68, no rush). Also beginning of speech by Sen. Paul Lucier (will not support or vote in favour of C-68 as it is presently written). Len Gustafson: Wants Senate committee to travel to provinces and hear from their Justice Ministers. Wonders what the point is if provinces don't co-operate. Wants C-68 split. Supports criminal part. Opposed to registration and will therefore vote against C-68. Encourages writing to all Senators. Included list of all Senators. Willie Adams: Views will be taken into consideration. Gildas L. Molgat: Posessing a gun is not a right. Wants to maintain different society than in the US. Gun control is part of that difference. Registration will not lead to confiscation. Wants to reduce the illegal use of firearms and guarantee a safer place for all Canadians. Commends Minister Rock. Included press release of Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and Canadian Police Association, and ``Fact Sheet "Amendments to Firearms Act"''. Terry Stratton: Appreciates taking time to share views. Public safety is important. Supports enhanced crime control, increasing sentences for using firearms when committing a crime, supports control of the possession of firearms by those who have been convicted of an indictable offence. Intends to follow debate very closely, will keep views in mind. David Tkachuk: We should support legislation that will reduce crime and that will be cost effective. Agrees with parts of C-68. Will follow debate closely. At this time, plans to vote against C-68 because of registration and police powers to search and seize. Lorna Milne: Is, along with the majority of Canadians, strongly in favour of this gun control bill. Carrying guns is not and never has been a "right" in Canada, unlike the US, where the right of a militia to bear arms has degenerated into a vast and fearsome proliferation of weapons. Unfortunately, guns, theft, and death respect neither sex nor size. Norman K. Atkins: Hopes that amendments will change C-68 from gun control to crime control legislation.
